Rady Children's Hospital Accessway

Concept to completion in just three weeks

Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego has office buildings located on Kearny Villa Rd. near Montgomery air field in central San Diego. One of the Rady buildings shares a parking structure with an adjacent office building, located up a steep embankment at an elevation a good floor higher than the Rady building.

For those parking in the structure, the quickest way to traverse the elevation gap between the structure and the Rady building was to step carefully down a drainage swale on the embankment, essentially dirt and rocks (and when wet from rain, mud) -- an unsafe and messy option for anyone, especially those in business attire or in high-heeled shoes. Those not willing to risk slipping down this slope were forced to take the only other alternative -- walking some four blocks out of the way to get to the Rady Building.

Rady Children's Hospital asked ETC to design and implement a solution to this problem as quickly as possible. ETC jumped into action, handling everything for the project -- analysis, design, agency permitting and construction -- completing an all-new staircase and walkway in just three weeks. This speedy turnaround time was enabled by ETC's highly efficient design/build process as well as ETC's experience working with agencies, significantly reducing the time to get permits for the construction.

The new accessway afforded a safe and short walk to and from the parking structure for Rady staffers. Said Timothy Jacoby, Vice President of Facilities and Planning at Rady Children's Hospital, "ETC provided a design/build solution to our building access problem that was cost-effective, efficient and that greatly improved employee morale. Well done."
